Photograph and Painting by Anthony Martins

On Saturday, September 10th a photography exhibit called “Kick It Old School” will be held at Freight Gallery in San Antonio, TX. According to the official flyer, “Kick It Old School is a curated Fotoseptiembre USA exhibition highlighting past methods of photography through the use of various film cameras, pinholes, instant film, alternative processes, darkroom techniques, and more. The exhibit takes viewers on a journey through time, revealing that it’s still possible to create compelling photographs through the use of old school practices. It is a reminder that the camera is the instrument by which the artist captures their vision.” The event will be free and open to the public.

The exhibit will feature artwork from several talented photographers who share an appreciation for the stylistic aesthetic of vintage photography. Among them is no other than Anthony Martins, a TIMEWHEEL label artist and music producer who operates under the name Arkeologist. He is known for having a strong presence in the local music scene as a multi-instrumentalist who is consistently putting out mesmerizing and avant-garde tracks that can be found on all major digital platforms. We chopped it up with Ark in preparation for his gallery and he had this to say about his experience working with the project:

“I started experimenting with combining painting and darkroom photography around 2014. It started as an organic way of altering this sense of ‘reality’ people tend to associate with photographs. I wanted to make my photos feel more surreal, absurd, or even nightmarish in order to better represent ways I might view reality and to question perceptual norms. Other than that my art is always inspired by music (sounds) I create and hear, books I’m reading and conversations with self and close friends.”

The event launch on September 10th from 7PM-10PM is sure to be a great evening of connecting with San Antonio’s visual culture. We will see you there!
